“The Coaching Conundrum: India’s Tutoring Industry”
In India’s sprawling education landscape, the ubiquitous coaching centres represent hope and despair. These institutions have cropped up to plug holes in an education system where school-leaving is increasingly disconnected from college entry and where university degrees may not be enough for jobs. However, tutoring and coaching, whether through the school, at specialised centres, in informal settings, or individually, exacerbate inequality and undercut the essence of learning. Yet, the coaching industry is a response to a felt need. The predicament isn’t just about the existence of coaching institutes but about whether their removal would significantly change the educational landscape. Does tutoring and coaching fill a gap that helps reduce inequality in the system, or does it add additional pressure to already stressed families?
Join us for our latest instalment of “Trendspotting,” an insightful exploration into the nuances of coaching and tutoring. The panellists will explore the impact of extra work outside the school on children of all ages, not only those at the school-leaving stage.
