Cambridge Mathematics Experience Week

14-18 April 2025, INDIA

Venue: Heritage International Xperiential School, Gurgaon (Delhi NCR)

About The Programme

The CAMBRIDGE MATHEMATICS EXPERIENCE WEEK is an intensive, five-day, non-residential programme for high school students (Grades 9-12) eager to engage deeply with mathematics. This course is designed for students following the CBSE, ICSE/ISC, IB, or IGCSE/A-levels curriculum streams. It distils the essence of the University of Cambridge’s undergraduate experience into a focused, hands-on, intensive clinic in Gurgaon (Delhi NCR, India) from 14-18 April 2025.

Hosted by Hearth Academy, the programme is designed to provide students with a rigorous yet engaging introduction to advanced mathematical thinking. Led by Paul Fannon, a University of Cambridge academic and Fellow, it combines lectures, small-group supervisions, and collaborative work.

Lectures will cover applications and the fundamentals of advanced mathematics, including statistics, probability, artificial intelligence, and data science.

Under Linear Algebra, participants will initially look at a vector as a geometric object before considering it more fundamentally as an element of a vector space, which can then generalise to other interesting objects. It will then consider linear mappings of these vectors as an object called a matrix, which can be studied in its own right. While linear algebra is a fundamental language of higher mathematics, this course will mainly use logical and axiomatic arguments to develop critical thinking and communication skills.

Under Probability, participants will examine ways to apply rigorous arguments to uncertain events. They will start by considering the idea of a probability distribution and expected value. Developing the algebra of these ideas will lead to some powerful general results.

The afternoon seminars will provide insight into mathematical topics such as formal logic, information theory, and machine learning.

Cambridge Supervisions is a system of small-group personal tuition that is a strength of the University of Cambridge. Participants in this programme will have multiple Supervisions to engage deeply with the course content.

Paul Fannon, Fellow at Christ’s College and Director of Studies in Mathematics, University of Cambridge, is the Course Director. The driving force behind the programme, Paul, is a distinguished figure in his field who currently serves as Chief Examiner for Mathematics for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

He embarked on his academic journey at the University of Cambridge as an undergraduate in 1998, specialising in Natural Sciences. Since then, Paul has researched, written, and taught various facets of mathematics, penning numerous A-level and IB textbooks. As the Chief Examiner for the International Baccalaureate, he has played a pivotal role in shaping their Applications and Interpretations Mathematics course.

With a wealth of teaching experience, he passionately delves into educational research, focusing on developing critical thinking skills in mathematics and statistical modelling. Paul brings this dedication to teaching to the forefront as he leads participants through the Cambridge Mathematics Experience Week.

Participants are expected to have a foundation in school-level algebra and statistics to ensure a seamless learning experience. The programme has specifically been designed for CBSE, ISC/ICSE, IB, and IGCSE students. This application-based course considers the different examination boards and class levels.
